Headlines Wavexpress Cable Trial Enters Second Phase Successful Testing with USA Media Group and News-Press & Gazette Reported in Phase 1 New York, NY, August 6, 2002: Wavexpress, USA Media Group, and the News-Press & Gazette Company (NPG), today announced that the first part of their testing was completed successfully. Cable modem users at systems in Missouri and Idaho subscribed to Wavexpress’ PC-based entertainment service, and viewed a variety of full-screen, digital video channels stored on their computers. Wavexpress leverages two assets for cable operators: available bandwidth and home storage on the PC. The service is delivered via IP Multicast, a broadcast transmission mode that uses a small portion of bandwidth from the cable modem channel to serve multiple subscribers simultaneously. Content is stored on the PC hard disk drive, protected by Wave System’s (NASDAQ – WAVX) EMBASSY®, a hardware security device that allows immediate, “on demand” access to cached content. During the next phase of the trials content will originate from the AT&T Digital Media Center (ADMC), which will act as the Network Operations Center (NOC). From the ADMC, content will be distributed to the cable headends. The ability to use a national NOC will allow the commercialization of a totally scalable, end-to-end IP delivery system that will provide the most bandwidth-efficient delivery of IP content when combined with IP Multicast with secure caching. “We are extremely pleased by the trial results so far. We have demonstrated a high-speed Internet experience that is both more compelling for customers and more cost-efficient for cable operators,” said Steven K. Sprague, chairman and CEO, Wavexpress. “The next phase of our trials will increase our focus on vital operational factors such as scalability.” About Wavexpress Wavexpress enables cable TV operators to deliver secure broadband content and services.
